I believe having a book collection with diverse protagonists is important year round, but Black History Month is specifically a great time to introduce new texts to your child that inform and celebrate the history, courage and contributions of African Americans. Even if your child isn’t old enough to engage in critical conversations on race quite yet, it’s never too early to expose them to books that open their eyes to the plight of others.
There are so many great books that you could choose from, so this list is far from exhaustive, however below are some of the few of my new favorites that I just recently added to our library!
You can click on the links below to purchase or read more about them on Amazon.
Top Row: Little Leaders (has both bold women and men versions) // The Youngest Marcher // Parker Looks Up
Middle Row: The Story of Ruby Bridges // Hidden Figures // The Case for Loving
Bottom Row: Little People, Big Dreams Harriet Tubman so many other important figures also available!) // Dream Big, Little One // Henry’s Freedom Box
